       Lillian Lowery, Delaware’s Secretary of Education

“Race to the Top” is top of mind to many involved in the business of educating Delaware’s children and it must be on the top of the agenda of business organizations across the State as well.  What is Race for the Top all about?  What has Delaware been doing to ensure that the State is a strong competitor for this federal funding? What difference will this money make to Delaware’s education system?  How can Delaware’s business leaders support the aggressive agenda for schools and, more important, student success?  Dr. Lillian Lowery will be with The Committee of 100 on the very day that the Race to the Top application is due to the U.S. Department of Education. She will tell us about Delaware’s application and answer questions about the agenda she and Governor Jack Markell have before them – and us. 

Dr. Lowery, the former Superintendent of Christiana Schools, holds a Doctorate in Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, a master's degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a Bachelor of Arts degree from North Carolina Central University. Prior to arriving in Delaware, Dr. Lowery was the Assistant Superintendent of Cluster VII for Fairfax County Public Schools in Fairfax, Virginia. She also served for two years as an Area Administrator for Fort Wayne Community Schools in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She has seven years experience as a school building administrator and has taught middle and high school English for seventeen years in school districts in Virginia and North Carolina.
