Jack Markell, John Carney with Jeffrey M. Bross & Beverley Baxter
While the Delaware Republican Party (as of this writing) is still trying to find "the" candidate for Governor after Alan Levin dropped out late in the game, the Democrats have an overabundance of riches, as Lt. Governor John Carney and Treasurer Jack Markell are set to face off in the September primary.
John C. Carney‚ Jr. has spent over 20 years in the public arena‚ working for Senator Joe Biden, then serving as Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for New Castle County Executive Dennis Greenhouse and Deputy Chief of Staff and Secretary of Finance for former Governor Tom Carper before being elected twice as Lt. Governor. Born in Wilmington‚ John was quarterback of the 1973 state championship St. Mark's football team and earned All-Ivy League and Most Valuable Player honors in football at Dartmouth College‚ from which he graduated in 1978. He earned a Masters in public administration from the University of Delaware.
Jack Markell is in his third term as State Treasurer‚ where he created the DE Money School and partnered to create the DE Financial Literacy Initiatives and the DE Bank at School Program. He led the effort to streamline State procurement processes, chaired the Information Services Task Force leading to revamping the State's IT management‚ and chairs the DE College Investment Plan. A native of Newark‚ Jack graduated from Newark High School‚ Brown University‚ with degrees in economics and development studies‚ and the University of Chicago‚ with an MBA. He was the 13th employee at Nextel and held senior management positions at Comcast.
Because this primary is so important‚ John Carney and Jack Markell will present their positions to our members at the May Dinner Meeting. The Committee of 100 debate format includes opening and closing statements from the candidates and answering questions submitted‚ in advance‚ by members. Members of The Committee of 100 are invited to submit questions for the candidates to bbaxter@committeeof100.com.
