May 2005
Insurance Commissioner Matt Denn
Matt Denn promised change in the Insurance
Commissioner's Office and, since taking office, the change
he's brought has been stunning. Matt's energy, visibility,
and accessibility, let alone his new ideas, have infused life
into a formerly near-moribund office.
On his second day as Delaware's Insurance
Commissioner, Matt submitted a new set of prompt-payment regulations
governing health insurers designed to reduce costs for Delaware's
health care providers which, in turn, will reduce health care
costs for Delawareans.
A few days later, Matt joined with Delaware
Democratic Senator Dave Sokola and Republican Representative
Donna Stone in bipartisan legislation to allow State police
and the Insurance Department's fraud unit to confiscate license
plates of uninsured motorists.
A few days after that, Matt proposed regulations
to require insurance companies to inform homeowners of potentially
serious gaps in their homeowners insurance.
The proposed changes have kept coming. From
reorganization of the Commissioner's office to a crackdown
on auto insurance fraud, from his 5-part initiative to rein
in medical malpractice costs to legislation to increase sanctions
for unfair insurance practices, from his bipartisan legislation
to create a statewide health insurance purchasing pool for
individuals and small businesses to legislation which bars
the use of credit scoring in auto and homeowners insurance,
Matt Denn is bringing an assertiveness to the Insurance Commissioner's
office which has, to say the least, set him apart from the
historic norm.
At his formal swearing-in ceremony, Matt
pledged to work with both sides of the aisle to get things
done. His agenda includes: “working to make health care
more affordable, controlling the costs of auto insurance,
helping our businesses thrive, standing up for individual
policyholders when they're treated unfairly, informing Delawareans
about their insurance, and helping our senior citizens with
their complex insurance problems.”
Matt Denn is on the go. He will share with
us his vision for Delaware and his plans for reform.
