DONNA M. COUGHEY
Chairman, President, & CEO, Mellon Bank (DE)

Mellon Bank has a long history. Founded in 1869 by Thomas Mellon and his sons, Andrew W. and Richard B. Mellon, as T. Mellon & Sons' Bank in Pittsburgh, it's history reached back even further when, in 1983, Mellon acquired Philadelphia-based The Girard Company, founded in 1935. However, it's earliest history reaches back to Delaware. In 1981, The Girard Company acquired Farmers Bank of Delaware, which was founded by Henry Ridgely in 1807.

Farmers Bank of Delaware was a founding member of The Committee of 100 in 1969. There are a number of other notable historical markers in Mellon Bank's history. In 1955 it became one of the first banks in the nation to acquire and install its own computer. Mellon was the first bank in Delaware to offer credit to married women without their husband's signatures.

Now, through acquisition and growth, Mellon Bank Corporation and Mellon Bank, N.A. have grown to global proportions and diversified in ways that would be beyond the comprehension of Thomas, Andrew, and Richard Mellon or Henry Ridgely.

In 1807 a new bank in the smallest state; today Mellon has approximately $2.5 trillion in assets under manage-ment administration or custody, including more than $467 billion under management. In 1955 the first computer; today InformationWeek has named Mellon, "Top 5 financial service organization for technology innovation."

Mellon has changed in more than size and technology. It is No. 1 in trust revenues among domestic commercial banks; the leading bank manager of mutual funds; the largest supermarket banking presence in the mid-Atlantic states; No. 1 proxy solicitor; No. 9 bank-owned leasing company; No. 1 insurance premium financing provider in the United States and Canada.

Donna M. Coughey, Chairman, President and CEO of Mellon Bank (DE), manages Mellon's 18 retail and nine supermarket banking offices, business banking, private banking, consumer lending, electronic delivery and sales support operation in New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties in Delaware. She will speak about Mellon Bank.
