The Committee of 100

The Committee of 100 is a business organization that promotes responsible economic development and addresses issues that affect Delaware's economic health.

Organized in response to problems in land use planning and state and local finance, The Committee of 100 has evolved into a broad-based organization that functions as a positive force as well as a critical observer. It can bring to bear the expertise of our membership for the benefit of all Delaware citizens.

Our members recognize that effectively addressing quality-of-life issues - such as education, housing, transportation, the environment, health care, public safety, libraries, recreation, the arts, and social services - requires a healthy economy.

Operations

The Committee of 100 monitors the proposals and actions of State, County, and municipal governmental bodies and agencies and actively participates in task forces, forums, hearings, and committees to address issues of importance.

The Committee of 100:

  • Monitors governmental legislation and proposals that business, small and large, might not otherwise have the time and resources to follow

  • Responds quickly and effectively to governmental proposals

  • Draws upon the considerable expertise of its members and does thorough research to address issues

  • Approaches each issue with a balanced perspective to protect the existing community and the environment while facilitating responsible economic development

  • Works to improve proposed legislation or regulations - not only to protect the economy of the City, County and State, but also, to benefit the community as a whole

Since its beginnings in 1967 - from its early emphasis on studies to address issues as wide-ranging as taxes and water; through its funding of such economic development tools as a multilingual brochure for international development; to its more recent involvement in land use, transportation, environmental, regulatory, and general economic development issues - The Committee of 100 has repeatedly made a difference in the ability to do business in New Castle County and Delaware.

Participation

Members of The Committee of 100 recognize that not only their individual businesses, but also, other businesses, families, individuals, the environment, ad the community as a whole benefit from a healthy economy. Membership provides an opportunity to work effectively toward that end and to support an organization that has an impact. Our members become more informed, more involved, and more effective.

As part of its educational and networking process, The Committee of 100 holds monthly dinner meetings. Key policy makers - such as the Governor, County Executive, Mayor of Wilmington, Secretaries of Transportation and DNREC, Director of the Delaware Economic Development Office, and Director of WILMAPCO - and prominent business leaders are guest speakers. Speakers are also invited to address current topics, ranging from infrastructure regulations to education reform, and from the latest commission report to economic forecasts.
